The Internet and the Home Page
One of the most difficult and most time consuming questions in selling either your product(s) and/or service(s) is how best they can be imaged to potential markets. This is where to power of your web sites home page can be either reaped or wasted. Put yourself in the position of a potential web surfer looking for your particular type of product. Even though there will most probably be tens of thousands of web sites offering the same if not similar products, most potentials will not surf past the 2nd or 3rd page. Even so, that is 20 to 30 competitors. So how do you stand out against the competition? A web page is unlike a newspaper or magazine advertisement, these paper based adverts are read differently on two major levels. Firstly, paper based reading involves reflected light; this is a natural way for our optical system to take in information. Screen based reading involves projected light, much like looking into a torch, but with a much lower intensity, eyes become tired much more quickly and have less natural ability to take in the full detail, hence resolution is actually lower in screen presentation than in that of paper. The second difference between the two is more of a focus argument. When reading from paper, it is second nature for use more tightly focus on what we are reading, we have isolated the text of graphic from our surrounds, it is the way we are taught in the early years of schooling. However, when faced with the internet the sear amount of information made available over-rides our earlier teaching and we tend to skim read until something catches out eye. It is combining these two simple pieces of information that enables us to make the most of our home page. Too much information on a page will deter the visitor from halting on the page, 'it takes too long' for the information to be processed in the few seconds they are likely to give the page. However, if too little information is offered the visitor will most probably bypass the page looking for something a little more substantial. If you can catch the potential customer's/client's eye with something subtle by not overwhelming; the site visitor should dwell long enough on the page to process the information you are offering. This can be a likened to a door to door salesman being invited in to the home. Capture your targets attention and you can open the millions of doors available on the internet. You may have the coolest web site in your field and not see any tangible benefit, or a template styled web site with no hope of catching an eye. The internet has opened up all markets, take advantage of it, pay attention to the planning and design of your home page; it is your most valuable marketing tool outside of television.
