During the month of September, the website changed its web layout to provide visitors simple access that enables them to access content in just a few clicks.
The mission of the Worldwide Transportation Library (WWTL) is to familiarise visitors with the roads and railroads of the world. With more than 2,200 photographs and 170 videos available, the WWTL today positions itself as a global player. The website is in its eighth year of development and has several volunteer photographers who regularly criss-cross the globe to capture new content.
The website began as a road photograph gallery, but later added railroad content to its portfolio.
The regular addition of new content gave WWTL its share of growing pains. As time went forward, there were many highway entries crowded onto a single page. Many visitors complained the website's layout was hard to navigate, therefore it took them too long to find information on Interstate highways, Irish motorways, etc.
"Visitors complained that our webpage loaded too slow, because there was too much content packed onto one page", states Carl Rogers, owner of the Worldwide Transportation Library. "If those folks had a slower DSL or cable package, it would take five to six seconds for our page to load. At that time, we literally put thousands of hyperlinks onto a single page with no particular organisation style. Now, content is organised by a top-down, continent to region menu. The page even loads quickly on a dial-up Internet connection. It's wonderful."
Rogers credits Eric Lozaga, owner of a web-design firm called 53 Minute Productions (http://www.53mp.com), with recommendations that make web-surfing an intuitive and seamless experience.
"In the world of highway sign enthusiasts, the personal websites created to showcase this rare hobby has been lacking in just about every aspect of today's standard of programming and design. The new version of the Worldwide Transportation Library raises the bar for highway sign hobbyists in every aspect", Lozaga mentions.
With four continents worth of railroad and highway captures, the WWTL caters to independent tourist who chart their travels. The site touts a large library of photographs, videos, and 360-degree panoramic views of the world. All content can be accessed in a few clicks. As a global supplier of media, the WWTL also offers translations in French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
