Flash Google -- Guava's Reaction to Google Crawling Flash Websites
Cornwall, UK (PRWEB) July 15, 2008 -- For years Flash, a popular choice for web designers, has been an unpopular choice for search engine optimisation (http://www.guava.co.uk/search-engine-marketing/search-engine-optimisation/) (SEO) - as Google and other search engines wouldn't read it. However, the recent announcement from Google that it is improving its support for Flash is a significant step forward for those with Flash websites.
Despite the initial excitement in the industry, it is extremely early days when it comes to defining an SEO strategy. SEO (http://www.guava.co.uk/search-engine-marketing/search-engine-optimisation/) specialist Guava is in the process of running tests to find the limitations of Flash crawling and to develop best practice approaches for its implementation. The Guava team were amongst the first to spot Google following links from Flash and crawling URLs contained within ActionScript 1 & 2.
Guava Director Edward Cowell commented:
"One of the key considerations is how the Flash files are embedded into pages. Our research shows from a search and usability perspective; pure JavaScript should be avoided. In addition, according to Google's Engineers, files linked to from a Flash movie are also currently treated as separate files, so developers may want to make sure their main links are contained within the Flash .SWF files themselves."
The Guava SEO team are conducting more tests including ActionScript 3's crawlability, and their findings will be posted on their blog, Search Engine War (http://www.search-engine-war.co.uk).
